  1. Literature & the 'Politics of Place' in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a rich history of writing and resistance. It's also where media suppression has been strong. Yet, in 2015 a Sri Lankan minister 'called on poets to help unite a divided nation' (the Guardian). How do today's poets, writers, and journalists navigate the 'politics of place'? What is their role in political discourse and what are the risks and rewards of navigating the 'politics of place' as writers, poets and journalists?

  2. The cost of Internet in Africa (how to get connected?)

Despite all the initial excitement that greeted the landing or announcement of new cables and backbone networks in Africa, disappointment is setting in. Prices for Internet access have gone down by a factor of 2 rather than 10 as expected. Indeed prices are still high in most of Africa outside a few North Africa countries and others like Senegal. South Africa is a most puzzling case where prices are still higher than even East Africa with its new found fiber.

So with most African countries now boasting of fiber in the backbone and fiber available on all the African coasts,…

  3. How did Global Voices become a community of learners?

For many of us, Global Voices has been first and foremost a learning experience. We learn in a diverse variety of ways, most of them informal, invisible, but meaningful and transformative. From the experiences of GVers there's a lot to learn in terms of digital literacy, intercultural exchange and opening one's horizons. The base of this talk can come from years of research and many of the testimonials GVers have shared over 10 years.

  4. Non-GVer perceptions of Global Voices

How do others see our community and it's working? What are our strengths and weaknesses? What could we do that we're not tackling already?

  5. Post-truth politics and future of freelance(independent) journalism

Newsrooms around the world are more dependent on local freelance journalists to report on crisis and dangerous zones. They work as stingers, translators, photographers and put their lives in danger by working without any hostile environment trainings and insurances. They are hired because they not only bring hard news, but also because they are affordable.
This session will explore local newsgathering-storytelling techniques and its impact on international media, And also how does working with international media affect the safety, livelihoods and careers of local freelancers?

  6. Accessability for Everyone

How do we write and layout texts so they're accessible for the largest possible number of people? Would changes in design, layout and the way we write and format our texts benefit people and are there changes for us to make our content more accessible? If yes, how do we achieve this and what chances and options do we have?

  8. Activism and storytelling in the postnational era

Activism and resistance no longer need to be such a solitary endeavor for on-the-ground social workers, members of a minority facing discrimination or people suffering in a war-torn country. Today, there are many technological platforms that facilitate closer connections between people around the world and encourage engagement beyond just a “like”. From written exchanges on social media to live-streamed protests, virtual presence can hold tremendous power of mobilization without boundaries. Thus, more than ever, traditional media — and new media in particular — can play a huge role in conflict prevention, conflict management and post-conflict reconstruction.

  9. Putting environmental and climate issues in the news

In the last 10 years we have seen a rising trend in environmental destruction for the sake of profit. We are also witnessing extreme weather caused by climate change. Yet, coverage in media on these issues, especially in developing countries hit the worse is very little or none. We have to change this and create space for discussion about these issues as they are threatening peoples health and lives.

  10. Video mapping and other tools for urban intervention

One way to create narratives and get the public engaged is using projection mapping tools. One can develop powerful messages, compelling contents, and take it to the streets. Are there members of the community who use tools like Madmapper, tagtool, etc.? Would it be possible to host a workshop? If a projection could be produced, you could impact the city with something positive. GV-style :)
