  3. Finding freelance jobs for engineers is easy, but making sure the role is suited for your field and getting the job is the tricky part. You need to make sure that the post is related to what you do because if you pick up a wrong position that you do not understand and need to turn down later, it will give your employer a false impression and you will lose credibility in the market.

  6. Activism and resistance no longer need to be such a solitary endeavor for on-the-ground social workers, members of a minority facing discrimination or people suffering in a war-torn country. Today, there are many technological platforms that facilitate closer connections between people around the world and encourage engagement beyond just a “like”. From written exchanges on social media to live-streamed protests, virtual presence can hold tremendous power of mobilization without boundaries. Thus, more than ever, traditional media — and new media in particular — can play a huge role in conflict prevention, conflict management and post-conflict reconstruction.
    I propose a panel…

  7. Despite all the initial excitement that greeted the landing or announcement of new cables and backbone networks in Africa, disappointment is setting in. Prices for Internet access have gone down by a factor of 2 rather than 10 as expected. Indeed prices are still high in most of Africa outside a few North Africa countries and others like Senegal. South Africa is a most puzzling case where prices are still higher than even East Africa with its new found fiber.

So with most African countries now boasting of fiber in the backbone and fiber available on all the African coasts,…

  8. Newsrooms around the world are more dependent on local freelance journalists to report on crisis and dangerous zones. They work as stingers, translators, photographers and put their lives in danger by working without any hostile environment trainings and insurances. They are hired because they not only bring hard news, but also because they are affordable.
This session will explore local newsgathering-storytelling techniques and its impact on international media, And also how does working with international media affect the safety, livelihoods and careers of local freelancers?

  9. In the last 10 years we have seen a rising trend in environmental destruction for the sake of profit. We are also witnessing extreme weather caused by climate change. Yet, coverage in media on these issues, especially in developing countries hit the worse is very little or none. We have to change this and create space for discussion about these issues as they are threatening peoples health and lives.

  10. One way to create narratives and get the public engaged is using projection mapping tools. One can develop powerful messages, compelling contents, and take it to the streets. Are there members of the community who use tools like Madmapper, tagtool, etc.? Would it be possible to host a workshop? If a projection could be produced, you could impact the city with something positive. GV-style :)

  11. In a open society, where people enjoy the freedom of speech can express themselves, make their voices heard or channel out their anger in the right way. However, in a society where its citizens are forced to be silent, how can see access to the social media, or how the social media outside that society can help its citizens to have a voice to change to situation.

  12. A panel exploring GV experiences and beyond in writing about the situation in Venezuela. There are more than two sides to the conflict(s) there, and all of them think that they have a monopoly on the truth and that everyone else is wrong (and perhaps dangerous).

As it tends to happen in internal conflicts, there are links with history and complext elements that complicate things... Also, as an author, you have your own opinions.

How do you check your own biases when attempting to present the facts of the matter? And how to write a story in which you need…

  13. For many of us, Global Voices has been first and foremost a learning experience. We learn in a diverse variety of ways, most of them informal, invisible, but meaningful and transformative. From the experiences of GVers there's a lot to learn in terms of digital literacy, intercultural exchange and opening one's horizons. The base of this talk can come from years of research and many of the testimonials GVers have shared over 10 years.

  14. In an era of technological progress and expansion of internet use, social media has been an instrument to spread information, a safe space to vent the outrage resulting from repression and individual frustration. Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms play a key role in inspiring young activists to express their views and shed lights on stories. How can this reality trigger mass mobilization on economic, political, social and cultural levels? Why does it have huge influence on shaping public opinion?

  16. based on some chats i've had with folks, i wonder if some kind of roundtable on election reporting would be interesting. in one sense, there's fewer topics more likely to be 'biased', since elections deals directly with politics and political positions. but on the other hand, it's an obligation of democratic states to support impartial reporting for elections, and citizens need access to impartial information to make decisions about their future. for many countries this has been an ongoing struggle, and recent elections worldwide have highlighted the internet's/social media's potential for false/faulty info to impact results. maybe this is of…

  17. Sri Lanka has a rich history of writing and resistance. It's also where media suppression has been strong. Yet, in 2015 a Sri Lankan minister 'called on poets to help unite a divided nation' (the Guardian). How do today's poets, writers, and journalists navigate the 'politics of place'? What is their role in political discourse and what are the risks and rewards of navigating the 'politics of place' as writers, poets and journalists?

  18. How do we write and layout texts so they're accessible for the largest possible number of people? Would changes in design, layout and the way we write and format our texts benefit people and are there changes for us to make our content more accessible? If yes, how do we achieve this and what chances and options do we have?

  19. The internet is central to modern journalism, but many across the world face barriers of low internet access, literacy, and censorship. There have, though, been innovative attempts to deal with this. For example, in Burundi when radios were closed after the controversial 2015 elections, many turned to sharing files (downloaded radio broadcasts, podcasts, articles...) via social media and also sharing/ copying files via quick connections between phones (Bluetooth, Whatsapp, etc.). This requires far lower general internet access and is more difficult to track/ censor.

What other methods/ formats have successfully dealt with low internet access or censorship? How could journalists…
