  1. Activism and resistance no longer need to be such a solitary endeavor for on-the-ground social workers, members of a minority facing discrimination or people suffering in a war-torn country. Today, there are many technological platforms that facilitate closer connections between people around the world and encourage engagement beyond just a “like”. From written exchanges on social media to live-streamed protests, virtual presence can hold tremendous power of mobilization without boundaries. Thus, more than ever, traditional media — and new media in particular — can play a huge role in conflict prevention, conflict management and post-conflict reconstruction.
    I propose a panel…

  2. based on some chats i've had with folks, i wonder if some kind of roundtable on election reporting would be interesting. in one sense, there's fewer topics more likely to be 'biased', since elections deals directly with politics and political positions. but on the other hand, it's an obligation of democratic states to support impartial reporting for elections, and citizens need access to impartial information to make decisions about their future. for many countries this has been an ongoing struggle, and recent elections worldwide have highlighted the internet's/social media's potential for false/faulty info to impact results. maybe this is of…

  4. In the last 10 years we have seen a rising trend in environmental destruction for the sake of profit. We are also witnessing extreme weather caused by climate change. Yet, coverage in media on these issues, especially in developing countries hit the worse is very little or none. We have to change this and create space for discussion about these issues as they are threatening peoples health and lives.

  5. For many of us, Global Voices has been first and foremost a learning experience. We learn in a diverse variety of ways, most of them informal, invisible, but meaningful and transformative. From the experiences of GVers there's a lot to learn in terms of digital literacy, intercultural exchange and opening one's horizons. The base of this talk can come from years of research and many of the testimonials GVers have shared over 10 years.

  6. Sri Lanka has a rich history of writing and resistance. It's also where media suppression has been strong. Yet, in 2015 a Sri Lankan minister 'called on poets to help unite a divided nation' (the Guardian). How do today's poets, writers, and journalists navigate the 'politics of place'? What is their role in political discourse and what are the risks and rewards of navigating the 'politics of place' as writers, poets and journalists?

  7. A panel modeled after the 'It's a Small World After All' episode of GV's podcast (https://globalvoices.org/2017/04/27/its-a-small-world-after-all-into-the-deep-podcast/). Panelists talk about a moment in which they felt connected to someone across borders and across language.

  8. The term "fake news" seemed to become an urgent concern in the English-speaking West thanks to the US election cycle, but despite the recent frenzy, fake news is not a new thing. Many parts of the world have been dealing with it. A non-US-centric examination of the phenomenon, perhaps from the perspectives of Russia/Ukraine, Mexico, India/Pakistan, Myanmar, Philippines?

  11. One way to create narratives and get the public engaged is using projection mapping tools. One can develop powerful messages, compelling contents, and take it to the streets. Are there members of the community who use tools like Madmapper, tagtool, etc.? Would it be possible to host a workshop? If a projection could be produced, you could impact the city with something positive. GV-style :)

  12. How do we write and layout texts so they're accessible for the largest possible number of people? Would changes in design, layout and the way we write and format our texts benefit people and are there changes for us to make our content more accessible? If yes, how do we achieve this and what chances and options do we have?

  14. Since so many geopolitical heavyweights now have stakes in Syria, the media war surrounding the conflict has taken several dimensions, often ignoring those who just wish for the 'world to listen' to the problems afflicting them. How can Global Voices' commitment to citizen journalism contribute to understanding the Syrian story? And what sort of lessons can we draw from this and apply to other cases?
